A side-lock gate valve carries a padlock boss on the bonnet that pins the stem, so the valve can be locked in the closed position with an ordinary padlock and cannot be reopened without the key. That is a revenue device as much as a valve: in a meter chamber, the difference between a valve anyone can open and one that needs a key is the difference between a billed connection and a stolen one. Ductile-iron body with epoxy coating for buried and chamber service; the lock boss is on the side, so the valve still fits a standard chamber.
