The 800X sits as a bypass between supply and return and opens only when the differential across the loop rises above its setting — which happens when terminal valves close and the pump keeps pushing the same flow into fewer and fewer paths. Left out, that differential is heard as noise at the last open valve and felt as a pump running far out on its curve. It is sized on the pump's minimum flow, not on the pipe size, and the bypass line has to lead somewhere the water can go, which in a chilled-water loop means back to the return header.
