The 500X protects what is upstream of it. As a sustaining valve it holds the inlet at a set minimum by throttling the discharge; as a relief valve it opens when the inlet rises above the set point and dumps the excess downstream. Both duties exist because a pump curve and a demand curve rarely agree at night: with flow falling, the pump runs up its curve and the pressure that arrives at the low zone is the pressure that splits the pipe. Set point, response speed and the size of the relief line are the three things to fix before the valve can be selected.
