The rotor is the VSI's whole mechanism: feed drops into the centre, is accelerated out through the ports and breaks against the rock shelf or the anvils. That makes rotor wear a function of throughput and of the feed's top size — oversized feed blocks the ports and the rotor turns into a grinding wheel, wearing itself out with no production. Rotor diameter, port count and the tip and wear-plate set are matched to the crusher model, and a rotor rebuilt with the wrong tip height runs out of balance.
