This one is sized for volume, not for accumulation. On a filling main it dumps the air ahead of the water at a rate the pipe can take, and on a pump trip it lets air in fast enough that the column does not separate and come back as a slam — the difference between a valve that vents and a valve that protects is measured in cubic metres per minute, and a single-orifice valve has none of it. Fit it at the high points the hydraulic grade line crosses, not at every high point on the drawing.
