IBBM Gate Valve: Iron Body, Bronze Trim

Published 29 Oct 20266 min read

An IBBM gate valve is identified by its trim materials: an iron body with bronze-mounted trim. This guide covers that material classification and how to confirm it on a drawing. Stem structure and position indication are covered separately in our OS&Y gate valve guide. The two are not alternatives. IBBM describes trim material; OS&Y and NRS describe stem arrangement, so an IBBM valve can also be OS&Y.

IBBM Gate Valve: Iron Body, Bronze Trim

What IBBM means

IBBM stands for Iron Body Bronze Mounted. The body is cast iron, and the trim includes copper-alloy parts such as wedge seating faces, seat rings, or the stem nut. The abbreviation covers body and trim materials only. It says nothing about pressure class or stem design.

Treat those as separate questions when you review a specification:

The distinction matters most when a drawing calls for an IBBM valve without stating the stem arrangement, or specifies OS&Y without defining trim materials. Check each requirement on its own.

Specification dimensionWhat it identifies
IBBMIron body and bronze-mounted trim
NRS or OS&YNon-rising stem or outside screw and yoke stem arrangement

How AWWA C500 and MSS SP-70 describe the category

AWWA C500-2019, *Metal-Seated Gate Valves for Water Supply Service*, describes iron-body, brass-mounted, non-rising-stem gate valves. That is the category associated with IBBM.

MSS SP-70-2011, *Gray Iron Gate Valves, Flanged and Threaded Ends*, covers gray iron gate valves with flanged or threaded ends. It lists four trim options: All Bronze, All Iron, Bronze with Ferrous Stem, and Resilient Seating. It also identifies configurations using NT, NF, OT, and OF, meaning non-rising or OS&Y combined with threaded or flanged ends, and lists Class 125 and Class 250.

Buyers can use these descriptions to compare terminology. They do not tell you which edition or specification governs a particular project. Confirm that with the project documents.

IBBM vs OS&Y: two different questions

OS&Y gate valve with exposed rising stem and yoke
OS&Y (outside screw and yoke) is the stem arrangement: the threads sit outside the body and the stem rises as the valve opens. IBBM and OS&Y answer two different questions.

Phrased as "IBBM vs OS&Y," the terms sound like competing valve types. They are not. One answers a materials question, the other a stem-configuration question.

For background on stem position indication, see the OS&Y vs NRS guide. For other material considerations, see our valve materials guide. If the drawing also distinguishes soft and metal seating, see resilient vs solid wedge gate valves.

QuestionRequirement to specify
What is the body and trim material? For IBBM, iron body with bronze-mounted trim
How is the stem arranged?NRS or OS&Y
What ends are required?Flanged or threaded, with the applicable standard and details
What pressure class or rating system applies? The project-specified class or PN system

Drawing review checklist

Gate valve with a position indicator scale on top
A position indicator is a datasheet line item, not a default. Check the drawing for it before quoting.
  • Body material: gray cast iron or ductile iron.
  • Trim material: whether bronze or copper-alloy trim is required, and which components that requirement covers.
  • Ends: the flange standard and drilling details, or a statement that threaded ends are required.
  • Pressure designation: the required system, such as Class 125/250 or PN10/16. Do not assume these designations convert to or interchange with one another.
  • Stem arrangement: NRS or OS&Y, specified separately from the trim material.
  • Coating: the required coating or treatment, stated in the project documents.
  • Operation: the required operating method.

What we list and how to request a quote

We list cast iron and ductile iron metal-seated gate valves in European PN and GB systems. These products are not automatically IBBM. IBBM is a trim-material classification, and any IBBM request has to be confirmed against the drawing or applicable specification.

Listed options include the BS5163 PN16 metal-seated gate valve, with cast iron GG25 available, NRS configuration, and replaceable seat rings; the Z45T GB metal-seated gate valve, with NRS configuration and cast iron or ductile iron body; the Z41T OS&Y metal-seated gate valve, with a rising stem and cast iron or ductile iron body; and a metal-to-metal seated gate valve range in NRS or OS&Y configurations, DN50–DN600, with PN10/16/25 and ductile iron or carbon steel body options.

None of these listings establishes that an item has IBBM trim. Dimensions, pressure designation, end details, and trim materials must be confirmed against the drawing and the agreed requirements. To request a drawing-based review, send the medium, nominal size, pressure designation, end standard, trim requirements, and quantity.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. IBBM identifies body and trim materials. Stem arrangement is a separate specification, NRS or OS&Y.
