A threaded button bit is chosen by three numbers: the thread that fits the string, the diameter that fits the hole, and the face profile that fits the rock — flat for hard, abrasive rock, convex for fractured ground, drop-centre where the hole has to start straight. Carbide buttons do the cutting; the steel body only has to hold them, so a bit that loses buttons is usually too hard a body for the rock, not too soft. R25 to GT60, Ø45–Ø130, drifting and tunnelling duty.
