Surface miners cut rock in a continuous pass, so the pick sees a long, hot, abrasive duty and the failure is tip wear rather than breakage. The JZ series here runs Φ30 to Φ42 shanks with Φ22 or Φ25 tips; the larger tip is the one that lasts on abrasive rock at the cost of feed rate, the smaller one cuts faster and wears sooner. Shank fit matters more than on a roadheader because the drum turns faster — a loose shank hammers its box and both are lost.
