The rod is where a drilling string loses its energy. Thread system has to match the rig and the string exactly — R25, R32, R38, T38, T45, T51 and T60 do not interchange, and a mismatched coupling is a broken thread within a shift. Length is chosen so the hole ends near a full rod, because every joint is a loss of energy and a place to break. Threads are induction hardened and the tube is alloy steel; the wall thickness carries the torque and the flushing hole carries the cuttings. A bent rod will not straighten and will not hold a thread.
