A sleeve joins two rods, and it is the part that fails first: it takes the full torque of both threads, sits in the annulus where the cuttings pass, and cannot be seen once the string is in the hole. Buy it from the same thread system and the same maker as the rods — cone angles that differ by a fraction of a degree will not seat, and the thread then carries a load it was not cut for. A flushing hole lets the sleeve pass the water column instead of starving the bit when the joint is near a collar.
