Taphole drilling is its own duty: a short hole through a refractory plug that is hot, abrasive and closing behind the bit as it drills, so the tools are short, stiff and made to be changed often — cross bits (1221), button bits (1431) and dedicated taphole rods, T27 or T38 thread, 3,000 to 5,000 mm. What decides the set is the taphole practice at the furnace: hole length, clay quality and how long the drill is allowed to run. These are consumables ordered to the pattern, not to a specification sheet.
