Electric Gate Valve: Actuator & SCADA Selection

Published 29 Oct 20266 min read

An electric gate valve suits a water network, pump station, or similar system that needs electrically operated valve control, including remote operation. The hard part of selection is not the valve body but matching the actuator to the power supply and the control-system interface. Our other guides cover OS&Y and NRS stem position, installation and maintenance, and procurement and compliance. This one covers the electric actuation layer: what connects to the control system, and what to confirm before you order.

Electric Gate Valve: Actuator & SCADA Selection

Start with the control-system interface

A manual OS&Y valve shows its position by the stem. Automating the same duty means deciding what replaces that visual indication.

The valve model alone does not specify an electric actuator gate valve. Power requirements, commands, position feedback, and behavior on power loss all change how the actuator is selected and wired.

We describe our listed electric gate valves as SCADA-ready for remote control. That does not name a communication protocol or guarantee compatibility with a given SCADA system. Confirm the control signals, feedback, protocol, and terminal arrangement before ordering.

Pre-order selection checklist

1. Power supply: Confirm whether the site needs single-phase or three-phase power, the voltage and frequency, and the permitted voltage variation. All three affect actuator selection. Our listed range offers 380 V and 220 V options; confirm the supply required for the specific order.

2. Control method: Specify whether operation will use local switches, remote dry contacts, 4–20 mA or a bus, and provide the SCADA point list if applicable. The control method sets the wiring and the number of terminals needed. Confirm the signal arrangement and any protocol requirements before ordering.

3. Position feedback: State whether you need feedback, and whether it should use potential-free contacts or an analogue signal. Confirm whether you need intermediate-position feedback, not only open and closed indications.

4. Behavior on loss of power: The process team must decide whether the valve stays in its last position, opens, or closes when power is lost. That is a process requirement, and the supplier should not decide it on the customer's behalf. Record the required behavior in the order specification and confirm how the selected actuator will provide it.

5. Manual emergency operation: Confirm whether manual operation uses a handwheel or a clutch mechanism, and whether power must be disconnected before switching to manual. The listed range includes a manual handwheel override, but confirm the operating arrangement required for the order.

6. Orientation and access space: Specify the actuator orientation, then check access to the wiring box and clearance for turning the handwheel. This matters most in valve pits and chambers, where access is tight. Check the intended arrangement against the space actually available on site.

7. Environment: Establish whether the valve goes outdoors, into a buried valve pit, or into a damp location. These conditions drive the enclosure protection and corrosion protection required. Confirm the requirements for the installation environment, and do not assume a protection rating without written confirmation.

8. Actuator-to-valve connection: Confirm the connection flange and driving component required between actuator and valve. ISO 5210:2026 and MSS SP-102-2024 give reference points for multi-turn actuator attachment dimensions. Coordinate on the applicable interface basis and confirm the actual connection for the order. Citing these standards does not by itself establish product compliance.

Information to send with an inquiry

To help us review the configuration, include the valve nominal size, pressure, end connection, medium, power supply, control method, required behavior on power loss, and quantity. If the valve connects to SCADA, include the point list and the command and feedback signals required. Also state the installation environment and any space or orientation constraints.

Before you finalize an electric gate valve specification, ask for written confirmation of actuator torque, enclosure protection, hazardous-area requirements, detailed control voltage, communication protocol, actuator make, and connection interface. The product listing does not specify these; they must be confirmed for the particular order.

Electric gate valve options

Position feedback has to be specified. An indicator on the valve and a signal to the control room are two different line items.

We list electric gate valve models Z945X, Z945T, Z941X, and Z941T, in NRS and OS&Y body configurations. The listing identifies an electric actuator, remote-ready SCADA control, a manual handwheel override, and 380 V or 220 V power options for water-network applications. Review the listed electric gate valve and send your site requirements so the configuration can be checked before ordering.

"Remote-ready" is not confirmation of a specific protocol or of SCADA compatibility. Confirm the control arrangement and all actuator parameters in writing before you place the order. For the valve's stem and position indication, see our OS&Y and NRS guide; for installation, see gate valve installation and maintenance. Frequently Asked Questions

The listing describes the valve as remote-ready for SCADA. It does not specify the protocol or signal arrangement, so confirm both against the project's control requirements before ordering.
